CLASSE LEONE

La Classe Leone, della quale facevano parte il LEONE , il TIGRE e il PANTERA, entrò in servizio nella Regia Marina nel 1924. Fu impostata e costruita presso i Cantieri Ansaldo di Sestri Ponente come classe di esploratori e inizialmente doveva essere completata da altre due unità che non scesero mai in mare: il Leopardo e il Lince.
Il LEONE , il TIGRE e il PANTERA furono riclassificate cacciatorpediniere nel 1938.
Durante il II conflitto mondiale operarono nel mar Rosso con base a Massaua e andarono tutti persi nei primissimi giorni del mese di aprile del 1941 sotto l’incalzare dell’offensiva portata dalle forze britanniche in quel teatro di guerra:
Il LEONE si autoaffondò a circa 15 miglia di un’isola dell’arcipelago delle Dahlak, la Awali Hutub, dopo essere finito su una scogliera immersa che aveva provocato grandi falle allo scafo;
Il TIGRE e il PANTERA, per contro, furono affondati dai loro equipaggi su bassi fondali al largo di Someina sulle coste dello Yemen. Queste due unità, oramai inutilizzabili, successivamente furino completamente distrutte da attacchi aerei e dal tiro dei cannoni del cacciatorpediniere britannico Kingston giunto sul posto.

Leone Class (formed by LEONE, TIGRE and PANTERA) was commissioned by Royal Italian Navy in 1924. Was laid down and built by Ansaldo Shipyard in Sestri Ponente as a scout class and, at the beginning, was scheduled to be completed by two other ships, which were never laid down Leopardo and Lince).
LEONE, TIGRE and PANTERA were reclassified as destroyers in 1938.
During WWII they operated in Red Sea having base in Massaua and they were lost in the very early days of April 1941 under british pressing offensive in that war scene.
LEONE self sank at about 15 miles off Awali Hutub island of Dahlak archipelago, after having sailed against a submerged reef which caused serious leaks in the hull.
TIGRE and PANTERA, on the contrary, were sank by their crews in shallow water off Someina along Yemen coastwise. These two ships, completely unusable, afterwards were destroyed by air raids and by gunnon shots of british destroyer Kingston, later arrived.
