CLASSE PALESTRO

La classe Palestro era costituita da quattro cacciatorpediniere: PALESTRO, CONFIENZA, S.MARTINO, SOLFERINO.
Costruite dai Cantieri Orlando di Livorno e iscritte nel registro del regio naviglio tra il 1921 e il 1923 furono declassate a torpediniere nel 1938. Andarono tutte perdute per cause varie nel II conflitto mondiale.
Il PALESTRO ed il CONFIENZA affondarono entrambi a fine novembre 1940: Il primo colpito da un siluro di un smg. inglese sulla rotta Bari-Durazzo; il secondo speronato di notte durante l’atterraggio presso il porto di Brindisi da parte dell’incrociatore ausiliario Carlo Cecchi.
Il S. MARTINO e Il SOLFERINO, dopo l’8 settembre 1943, furono catturati rispettivamente al Pireo e a Suda dai tedeschi e incorporati nella Kriegsmarine con il nome di TA. 17 e TA 18.
Nell’ottobre del 1944 sia il TA 17 che il TA 18 furono affondati: il primo, sempre al Pireo, da un attacco aereo alleato il secondo, nel golfo di Salonicco a sud di Volos, da parte di due cacciatorpediniere britannici.

Palestro Class was constituted by four destroyers: PALESTRO, CONFIENZA, S.MARTINO, SOLFERINO.
Built by Orlando Shipyard in Leghorn and commissioned between 1921 and 1923, were declassified to torpedo ships in 1938. They were lost by different reasons during WWII.
Both PALESTRO and CONFIENZA sunk at the end of november 1940: the former, heading from Bari to Durazzo, by a torpedo launched from an English submarine; the latter rammed in the night approaching Brindisi harbour by auxiliary cruise Carlo Cecchi.
S. MARTINO and SOLFERINO, following September eight 1943, were captured respectively at Pireo and at Suda by Germans and jointed to Kriegsmarine as TA 17 and TA 18. In October 1944 both were sunk: the former, at Pireo, owing to an allied air strike; the former, in Salonicco gulf south of Volos, by two british destroyers.
