The Maestrale lost her stern on 9 January 1943, hitting a mine 40 n.m. north of Biserta. She was escorting m/s Ines Corrado together with the destroyer Corsaro, that sank on the same mine barrage. Taken in tow by the torpedo boat Calliope - and later by two tugs - Maestrale reached Biserta in the morning of 11 January, when this photograph was taken. She was towed to Genoa in February to receive a new stern, but she was still undergoing repairs as of 8 September 1943; sunk by the Germans near the inner side of the breakwater, in front of "Ponte Eritrea" ("Eritrea Quay"), Maestrale was refloated in 1946-1947 and immediately broken up.
