ANDROMEDA (2)

Torpedo-boat Andromeda, built by Ansaldo Shipyards in Sestri Ponente, was commissioned on December 6 1936. During the night between March 16 and 17 1941 she was attacked by Britain torpedo-aircrafts riding at anchor in Valona bay, east Karaborum peninsula, while she was protecting, together with torpedo-boat Abba, a six merchant ships convoy. Hit by a torpedo at midship, she sank disappearing in the waves in a short time together with 50 out of 137 people on board. On December 6 2016, approximately after 76 years, the scuba drivers’ team “Iantd Expedition, directed by Cesare Balzi, identified the wreckage thanks to the three 100/47 OTO gun-mount of the ship and to the Italy’s Star at the bow. It lays, broken in two and heavily covered with fishing nets, in a sandy floor at 53 meters depth.
