Re Umberto

Nel novembre 1915 fu disposto l’invio del “Corpo speciale italiano” in Albania con il compito di rinforzare la piazzaforte di Valona con il trasporto di truppe dalla base navale di Taranto.
Il primo convoglio partì il 2 dicembre 1915 mentre il secondo, composto dai piroscafi trasporto truppe Re Umberto e Valparaiso e scortato da 4 cacciatorpediniere, salpò nel pomeriggio del 3 dicembre 1915.
Alle 9,45 le navi avevano già passato Punta Linguetta e mentre navigavano dentro il canale di sicurezza che conduceva alla baia di Valona, una colonna di acqua e fumo, dovuta ad una forte esplosione, si sollevò dalla fiancata sinistra della Re Umberto che quindici minuti dopo si spezzava in due ed affondava. Poche ore dopo veniva colpito da una mina anche il cacciatorpediniere di scorta Intrepido che, gravemente danneggiato, si incagliava presso Punta Linguetta per affondare pochi giorni dopo. I due affondamenti furono causati dalle mine del sommergibile tedesco UC14 comandato dall’ Oberleutnant zur See Caesar Bauer, lo stesso che un anno dopo affonderà la corazzata “Regina Margherita”.


In November 1915 the “Corpo Speciale Italiano” (Italian Expeditionary Corp) was ordered to join Albania to enforce the fortified town of Valona, transferring its troops from the naval base of Taranto.The first convoy left December the 2nd 1915 and the second, composed by the troops-steamers Re Umberto and Valparaiso and escorted by 4 destroyers, set sail on December the 3rd 1915 afternoon.
At 9.45 of the following day the ships already passed Punta Linguetta and during the navigation into the security shipway to Valona Bay, from the left broadside of Re Umberto rose a water and smoke fall, caused by a strong explosion: the ship after fifteen minutes broke in two and sunk.
After few hours, the escort destroyer Intrepido was hit by a mine as well, she was seriously damaged and ran aground near Punta Linguetta. She was sunk after few days.
The two sinkings were caused by the mines of the German submarine UC 14 in command of the Oberleutnant zur See Caesar Bauer, the same who the following year will sink the battleship Regina Margherita.
