Regina Margherita

Durante una notte di tempesta, l’11 dicembre 1916 alle 21,30 circa, la regia nave da battaglia
Regina Margherita urtava due mine scomparendo misteriosamente all’uscita della Baia di Valona
(Albania), tra l’Isola di Saseno e Punta Linguetta. L’affondamento portò alla perdita di 671 persone.
La Marina austro-ungarica accreditò l’affondamento al sommergibile posamine tedesco UC-14.
Alle 09,50 del 30 luglio 2005 , il relitto della regia Nave Regina Margherita è stato ritrovato dall’Instructor Trainer Cesare Balzi durante una immersione a 70 mt. a Punta Linguetta.
A seguito di tale scoperta è stata organizzata una spedizione ufficiale IANTD al fine di produrre una
documentazione video fotografica dell’importante relitto; la spedizione si è svolta dal 10 al 16
agosto dello stesso anno, con il patrocinio del Consolato Generale d’Italia a Valona che ha curato i rapporti con le autorità albanesi.


In the stormy night of the 11th December 1916 at 21.30 about, the royal battleship Regina Margherita hit against two torpedoes mysteriously disappearing at the exit of Valona Bay (Albania), between Saseno Island and Punta Linguetta. The sinking caused the lost of 671 sailors aboard.
The Austro-Hungarian Navy ascribed the sinking to the German submarine mine-layer UC 14.
At 9.50 of the 30th July 2005 the wreck of the Regina Margherita was found by the IANTD Instructor Trainer Cesare Balzi during a dive to 70 m near by Punta Linguetta.
An official IANTD expedition was organized following this discovery, to realize a video-photographic documentary about that important wreck; the expedition took place from the 10th to the 16th August on the same year, supported by the Consolato Generale d’Italia (General Consulate of Italy) in Valona that took care of the relationships with the Albanian authorities.
