CL. FORMIDABILE

FORMIDABILE e TERRIBILE della classe FORMIDABILE, due pirocorvette dotate di tre alberi armate con vele di taglio, di circa 65 mt di lunghezza f.t. e di oltre 2.700 ton di dislocamento, vennnero varate nel 1861 presso i cantieri navali francesi Forges et Chantiers de la Méditerranée di Tolone.
Furono le prime navi da guerra della neonata R.M.I. dotate di una corazzatura: infatti il fasciame esterno in legno era stato rivestito con piastre metalliche da 115 mm.
L’ armamento, costituito da una singola fila di cannoni ad avancarica posizionati su ciascun lato del ponte principale, era composto da 10 pezzi disposti su ogni fiancata: due da 203 mm a canna liscia e otto da 164 mm a canna rigata. In seguito alla fine degli anni settanta, ambedue le unità furono riconvertite, modificandone l’armamento, in navi Scuola cannonieri, rimanendo in attività per circa altri venti anni.
La FORMIDABILE radiata nel 1904 venne utilizzata, in seguito, come Deposito Munizioni alla Spezia; la TERRIBILE radiata nel 1903 fu venduta a privati e rottamato.

FORMIDABLE and TERRIBLE of the FORMIDABLE class, two corvettes equipped with three masts armed with cutting sails, about 65 meters in length and over 2,700 tons of displacement, were launched in 1861 at the French shipyards Forges et Chantiers de la Méditerranée in Toulon. They were the first warships of the newly formed R.M.I. to be equipped with armour: in fact, the outer wooden planking had been covered with 115 mm metal plates. The armament, consisting of a single row of muzzle-loading guns positioned on each side of the main deck, consisted of 10 pieces arranged on each side: two 203 mm smoothbore guns and eight 164 mm rifled guns. At the end of the 1970s, both units were converted into gunnership training ships, and remained in operation for about another twenty years. The FORMIDABILE was decommissioned in 1904 and was later used as an ammunition depot in La Spezia; the TERRIBLE was sold to private individuals and scrapped in 1903.
