UC14

L’U-boot posamine UC, soprannominato il "killer dell'Adriatico", aveva svolto, tra il 1915/16, tutte le sue missioni nel Mediterraneo affondando un numero impressionante di navi nemiche, fra le quali le italiane Regina Margherita, Re Umberto e Intrepido. Nel 1917 venne trasferito alla Flottiglia U-boot delle Fiandre. Il sommergibile fu visto scomparire nei flutti con tutto il suo equipaggio il 3 marzo dello stesso anno, mentre rientrava nella base di Zeebrugge (Belgio) da una missione contro la costa inglese, Infatti alle 22,15 circa fu vista una esplosione a prua, causata probabilmente da una mina innescata e rimasta intrappolata nell’apposito silos. La spedizione ha accertato che il relitto, che giace su un fondale di 25 mt., è sicuramente l’UC 14 poiché esso presenta tutte le caratteristiche di questa classe di sommergibili posamine, con particolare riguardo ai silos. L’esame dei resti ha confermato la versione dell’esplosione di una mina dello stesso sommergibile, molto probabilmente nel secondo silos di prua, che lo ha spezzato in due.

The mine–laying U-boot UC 14, notorious as “the killer of the Adriatic”, from 1915 and 1916 accomplished all her deadly missions in the Mediterranean sea sinking a huge number of enemy ships, among these the Italian ships Regina Margherita, Re Umberto and Intrepido.
In 1917 she was transferred to the German U-boot Flotilla of the Flanders. On the 3rd of March of the same year the submarine disappeared into the waves with all the hands aboard, while she was returning in her Zeebrugge base (Belgium) from a mission against the British coast. In fact, on 22.15 a big explosion on the bow happed, probably, caused by the self explosion of one of her mines into her silos. The expedition confirmed that the wreck, lying at 25 m deep, certainly is for sure the UC14, because all the features are those of a mine-laying submarine, particularly regarding the silos. The examination of the remains clearly shows that the explosion was due to a mine of the submarine herself, probably in the second silos, which broke the vessel in two parts, blowing the bow away.
